Submission + - Apple iPhone X's Face ID Unlocked Using 3D-Printed Mask (thehackernews.com)

parallel_prankster writes: Just a week after Apple released its brand new iPhone X on November 3, a team of hackers has claimed to successfully hack Apple's Face ID facial recognition technology with a mask that costs less than $150. Bkav researchers re-created the owner's face through a combination of 3D printed mask, makeup, and 2D images with some "special processing done on the cheeks and around the face, where there are large skin areas" and the nose is created from silicone. It should be noted that creating such a mask to unlock someone's iPhone is a time-consuming process and it is not possible to hack into a random person's iPhone.
However, if you prefer privacy and security over convenience, we highly recommend you to use a passcode instead of fingerprint or Face ID to unlock your phone.

First off, I read the manifesto. My point is this - hypothetically if this was a paper submitted to a journal this would be rejected in the first round and here would be some of the comments :-
1) Go read XYZ, your central premise has been debunked many times
2) Go travel in these parts of the world where you will see the long held view that women are inferior in XYZ professions is clearly shown to be incorrect.
3) Go read references ABC about cultural impact on womans careers etc.

Again, the fact that these have to be explained simply indicates that people dont even want to read anymore. They have a narrow world view and they would rather die defending it than change.

Exactly this! And not to mention he made his anecdotally-evolved views public in a company forum as if they were peer-reviewed facts. I have no problems with people discussing differences between genders etc but this was not one. This was an poorly formed opinion trying to establish legitimacy via popular votes.

Its main aim was not to improve security so much since any idiot can figure out that people can re-reroute their flight plan to circumvent this ban. Its main goal was to create hysteria over terrorism, to point the blame at specific countries and to show that the guvmint is trying to do something about it.
It was not well researched or implemented but its goal was never that.

The advantage maybe more for HBO, no price reduction for them but they may not have to manage so many users simultaneously. HBO may be in a position to dominate because of GoT and some oversubscription of bandwidth may be somehow managed on Hulu's side? Just a thought.
Otherwise, I dont see how simply convenience of using HBO from Hulu's site is any better than just paying for HBO now.

Comment Cloud (Score 2) 165

I see this everywhere - its the Cloud. Companies are not investing so much in maintaining their own IT systems now. They are using a bunch of features provided in the cloud. So mostly, there is no need for so many Indian IT firms. The few ones that are still running are just getting bigger because they are getting more business.

The problem is that executive branch does have the power to enforce such bans. They can always get lawyers to write up the correct language needed. In this case, Mr-cannot-keep-his-twat-shut made so many comments explicitly displaying the nefarious reasons for his ban that made it easier for the appeals courts to use that against the ban. At the Supreme Court level, this had a good chance of passing. Either way Repugs come out winners because even if they lose, they can say tried and the liberal judges on the court rejected it.

There is info in the article exactly about this. They've done a good job about updating mostly however, for one of their phones they walked back on their promise to update to Android 7.0 within a year. So, basically with anyone else other than Google, cant really expect much regarding OS updates. They do have a strong community though.

Thats actually a good point now that I think about it. Generally, I dont go by the overall score at all. I read what most of the critics are saying. That usually tells me almost everything I need to know to either prepare myself for watching the movie or to not go at all.

While I agree there are some good movies that have poor Rotten Tomatoes ratings which makes me wonder if I missed a movie because of RT reviews, I would still consider them to be a pretty good indicator of movie quality. The studios are just mad that RT tells me what I need to know about crappy movies before I spend my money on them!

This is so true. As someone who has been on Slashdot and Reddit for the past 5-10 years (on Reddit close to when it started), it seems most discussions have become hyper-partisan and you are no longer sure if you are talking to someone who is interested in having a serious conversation about the topic or just wants to vent out his feelings often as facts! And yes, I cant say I am completely clean on this either.

Yes and No. Hillary was an awful candidate no doubt but a lot of people still voted for her because she was better than the alternative lunatic candidate. Regarding the people being ignored I think partly those people also rejected a lot of progressive policies over the years via electing Republican governors, state legislators etc. Hate goes both ways.
And the fact that Trump told them all they wanted to hear should not have been enough for them to vote for him. On top of that the vitriol he spewed over his campaign, sorry, I have no sympathy for anyone whoever voted for him even if they claim they were suffering in the prev. administration.
